Description

This unit is the first of the two units, STAT5001 and STAT5002, which are taken in successive semesters, and jointly comprise the research project that must be completed to fulfill the requirements for the Master of Statistics.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) apply statistical reasoning to analyse the essential structure of problems arising in areas of statistics and extend their knowledge of statistical techniques and adapt solutions to different situations; (2) plan and organise a research-based project on a stastistical topic (selected in conjunction with a supervisor); (3) develop a research project in a timely manner and present their findings effectively to a broad audience, including experts in the area; (4) explain the context and significance of their project with reference to the relevant literature; (5) prepare high-quality and well-structured statistical documents in LaTex; and (6) write technical text, construct and present a talk, and communicate effectively with others..

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) dissertation (completed in STAT5002); (2) seminar (completed in STAT5002); and (3) scientific communication (report completed in STAT5001, and presentation completed in STAT5002). Further information is available in the unit outline.
