Description

This unit develops the algebraic and trigonometric skills needed for success in university-level mathematics. Students explore key pre-calculus topics with a focus on developing a strong understanding of mathematical functions and their graphs. Emphasis is placed on problem solving, reasoning, and the use of mathematical representations.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) apply the laws of indices and algebraic techniques to simplify and factorise expressions, and to solve equations involving linear, quadratic and exponential relationships; (2) interpret and use function notation to describe and graph a range of functions, including linear, quadratic and exponential functions; (3) solve contextual mathematical problems by applying appropriate algebraic methods, demonstrating logical reasoning and clear communication of working; and (4) apply trigonometric concepts and techniques, including the use of radian measure and the unit circle, to solve geometric and real-world problems.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) online tests and (2) online final test. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Note
This online pathway unit - Maths for STEM is designed to provide flexibility while maintaining meaningful interaction with tutors and peers. Students are required to view a one and a half hours of recorded lectures (for specific units) each week at a time that suits them. In addition, students are required to attend a timetabled one-hour live online tutorial and complete independent pre- and post-tutorial learning activities designed to reinforce understanding, build mathematical skills and support success at university.
