Unit Overview

Description

This unit builds on the knowledge gained in the DENT3007 Fundamentals of Clinical Dentistry 1 unit, and it will be taught in conjunction with the DENT4213 and DENT4214 Fundamentals of Clinical Dentistry 2 Parts 2 and 3 units. This Unit introduces students to the clinical discipline of Endodontics and continues their learning in the clinical discipline of Periodontics. It will have a focus on the biology and pathology of the dental pulp and periodontal tissues. Concurrently, students will learn the practical clinical skills required to treat periodontal conditions and to manage pulp and periapical conditions. Personal and professional development will continue throughout the Semester.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) explain the structure and functions of the pulp-dentine complex and the responses of the pulp to injurious and stimulating factors; (2) explain the aetiology, pathogenesis, classification and diagnosis of pulp, root canal and peri-radicular conditions and the principles and biological rationale for root canal treatment techniques, and plan appropriate clinical endodontic treatment; (3) apply basic clinical skills to manage endodontic conditions in a simulation environment; (4) explain the aetiology, pathogenesis and classification of periodontal conditions; (5) explain the principles and biological rationale for periodontal treatment techniques, and plan appropriate clinical periodontal treatment; (6) apply clinical skills to manage periodontal conditions in a simulation environment; and (7) apply consistent professional, ethical, and respectful behaviour, in accordance with the DMD Student Handbook and the Dental Board of Australia Code of Conduct. This includes maintaining attendance and punctuality, engaging in effective communication, demonstrating accountability, and being responsive to feedback. Meeting these expectations is a mandatory requirement for successful unit completion..

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) written assessments; (2) practical assessments; and (3) professional behaviour (assessed through continuous observation) – pass/fail. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the written assessments, practical assessments, and professional behaviour (assessed through continuous observation) – pass/fail components.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
