Unit Overview

Description

In this unit, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of clinical dentistry including the clinical examination of patients, occlusion, dental materials that are used to restore teeth, professional behaviour, and the application of policies and protocols for clinical dental practice. Students will also learn and develop their pre-clinical manual skills in operative dentistry in a simulation environment.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) explain and apply biomaterials used for direct and indirect restorations; (2) analyse the correlation between the selection and properties of dental materials and the clinical outcomes of direct and indirect restorations; (3) explain the principles and importance of appropriate communication in the health profession; (4) explain the skills required to undertake a basic clinical examination, including the identification of oral structures; (5) apply infection prevention and control protocols in clinical dental practice and explain other mandatory policies and protocols in dental practice; (6) perform pre-clinical direct tooth restorations to apply and refine manual skills; (7) explain dental occlusion and how it relates to dental practice; and (8) apply consistent professional, ethical, and respectful behaviour, in accordance with the DMD Student Handbook and the Dental Board of Australia Code of Conduct. This includes maintaining attendance and punctuality, engaging in effective communication, demonstrating accountability, and being responsive to feedback. Meeting these expectations is a mandatory requirement for successful unit completion..

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) written assessments; (2) practical assessments; and (3) professional behaviour (assessed through continuous observation) – pass/fail. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the written assessments, practical assessments, and professional behaviour (assessed through continuous observation) – pass/fail components.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
