Unit Overview

Description

This unit develops foundational academic skills in both information literacy and academic writing to support university-level study. Students will learn how to analyse academic tasks, identify information needs, and locate and evaluate credible sources using a range of tools including library databases and the internet. The unit also focuses on integrating research into writing through paraphrasing, quoting, and summarising, while applying appropriate referencing conventions. Emphasis is placed on the full writing process, from planning and researching to drafting, revising, and editing, to produce clear, well-structured academic texts across various formats and purposes.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) analyse academic tasks to determine key concepts, information needs, and apply appropriate research strategies to locate and evaluate literature related to the health and science contexts; (2) critically appraise the research literature to develop a scientific argument in a health-related topic; (3) integrate source material into writing using paraphrasing, quoting, and summarising, with accurate referencing; and (4) apply academic writing conventions to produce organised, cohesive texts for a range of academic purposes, demonstrating competence in the full writing process.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) paraphrasing; (2) annotated bibliography; and (3) literature review. Further information is available in the unit outline.
