- Description
This unit examines third-wave therapies in contemporary clinical psychology practice. Students explore the foundational principles and delivery of approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and the Unified Protocol, and evaluate how these can be applied across diverse populations and age groups. Key themes include transdiagnostic assessment, mindfulness, mindful exposure, and acceptance-based techniques as cross-cutting intervention strategies. Students are given the opportunity to develop skills in the application of third-wave therapies and associated assessment techniques in clinical practice

Students are able to (1) evaluate and apply knowledge of psychological theories of aeitology, progression and/or recovery, precursors, and sequelae of psychology disorders through the lens of third-wave therapies, considering developmental systems, culture, and biopsychosocial models across the lifespan and implications for case formulation; (2) understand, apply, and integrate transdiagnostic assessment approaches and differential diagnosis using international taxonomies of classification of psychological disorders to inform case formulation of complex presentations, as well as progress throughout treatment, considering culture (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures) and individual differences; and (3) demonstrate understanding of how to select, tailor, and implement third-wave therapy techniques, based on case formulation across ages and cultures, and use evidence-based practice to manage psychological disorders.

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) case report and (2) viva. Further information is available in the unit outline.
