- Description
This unit examines psychological and neuropsychological intervention approaches for mood and anxiety presentations, as well as rehabilitation strategies for neuropsychological disorders across adult and paediatric populations. Students explore cognitive-behavioural therapy–based counselling and intervention skills, including cognitive restructuring and behavioural activation, and evaluate how these are applied in clinical practice. Key themes include empirically supported and culturally responsive interventions for acquired brain injury and neurodevelopmental disorders. Students are given the opportunity to develop applied skills in both psychological intervention and neuropsychological rehabilitation across a range of clinical presentations.

Students are able to (1) develop core CBT skills, including cognitive techniques and behavioural activation; (2) demonstrate core counselling skills in culturally responsive ways; and (3) identify and apply psychological rehabilitation and other interventional techniques, including behaviour management, monitoring, and remediation to a variety of neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric presentations.
- Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) counselling/CBT Treatment plan with rationale; (2) viva 2: Application of a neuropsychological report to an intervention plan; and (3) viva 1: counseling and CBT skills. Further information is available in the unit outline.
To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the viva 2: Application of a neuropsychological report to an intervention plan and viva 1: counseling and CBT skills components.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.
