Unit Overview

Description

This unit integrates an advanced understanding of diabetes pathophysiology, comorbidities, lifestyle, and medical management to deliver health services as a diabetes educator. It provides skills to engage in quality improvement activities to enhance service delivery and health professional and consumer education. Motivational interviewing and behaviour change theories will be addressed.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate the provision of evidence-based diabetes education and (2) communicate information on the physiological and psycho-social issues affecting diabetes management.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) face to face person clinical observation component - placement; (2) virtual experience (including participation in assessed online discussion forums and online group discussions); (3) professional behaviour; (4) ADEA Graduate Certificate Courses in Diabetes Education and Management Student Placement Record

- Feedback and reflections; and (5) participation in the face to face workshop in Perth. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the professional behaviour and ADEA Graduate Certificate Courses in Diabetes Education and Management Student Placement Record - SMART goals - Feedback and reflections components.

This unit is assessed on an ungraded pass/ungraded failed basis. All assessment items must be successfully completed.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Note
Diabetes is a National Health Priority Area. The condition is characterised by hyperglycaemia caused by an inability to either make and/or use insulin effectively. Hyperglycaemia affects nearly every part of the body including diabetes-related retinopathy, neuropathies, poor wound healing and incontinence to causing chronic kidney disease, amputations and cardiovascular disease.

Diabetes educators are registered health professionals who have undertaken further training. Diabetes educators are government-funded to provide services to support people living with diabetes to help them manage their sugar levels and health to prevent disease progression and serious outcomes.

Professional Recognition
This unit is part of a sequence that meets the requirements of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) for the formal learning in Step 1 towards becoming a Credentialled Diabetes Educator.

After completing the Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Management and Education, learners will be Diabetes Educators. To credential with ADEA as a Credentialled Diabetes Educator, they will need to continue to complete their 500 practical hours, 6 months of mentoring and the practical assessment through ADEA.
