Unit Overview

Description

This unit introduces modern power semiconductor devices, which are essential components in contemporary electrical and electronic systems, including renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, and industrial applications.

In this unit, students develop knowledge of power semiconductor device technologies. Topics include semiconductor physics for power devices, power diodes, power transistors (BJT, MOSFET, IGBT), thyristors (SCR, GTO, MCT, IGCT), device fabrication processes, thermal management, reliability and failure analysis, and wide bandgap materials and devices (GaN, SiC, Ga?O?).

The unit integrates theoretical understanding with practical application, covering device operating principles, structures, performance characteristics, and manufacturing processes.

Students are exposed to device fabrication, packaging, and testing using the facilities of the Western Australian Node of the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF-WA).

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) analyse the impact of material properties and device structure on the power device performance; (2) evaluate the device characteristics for specific applications; (3) design power devices according to performance requirements; and (4) formulate the manufacturing processes and quality control of power semiconductor devices.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) quizzes; (2) laboratories; and (3) examinations. Further information is available in the unit outline.
