- Description
This unit models and promotes active mathematics teaching and learning in middle and upper primary. Pre-service teachers engage with evidence-based teaching practices, including explicit instruction, modelling, scaffolding, and structured lesson sequencing, to develop the four mathematics proficiencies across all content strands for Years 3–6. They build a portfolio of strategies that support students to work mathematically, optimise knowledge acquisition, reduce cognitive overload, and develop general capabilities while addressing Australian Curriculum cross-curriculum priorities. Pre-service teachers apply their knowledge to plan and sequence a unit of work and teaching program for a key mathematical concept, incorporating assessment, feedback, and progressively challenging tasks to support mastery. Through independent and collaborative work, they strengthen their confidence and mathematical proficiency.

- Outcomes
Students are able to (1) apply knowledge of how primary students learn mathematical concepts and skills, including an understanding of neuroscientific findings; (2) develop a rationale for teaching middle and upper primary mathematics grounded in evidence-based teaching practices; (3) apply sound content and pedagogical knowledge—including explicit instruction, modelling, scaffolding, and independent problem-solving—alongside curriculum-aligned syllabus and support documents to design a coherently planned and sequenced unit of work for Years 3–6; (4) differentiate the curriculum, lesson plans and programs to address diverse mathematical learning needs across a range of abilities and social and cultural contexts, including within a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS); (5) incorporate the mathematical proficiencies, general capabilities, and cross-cultural priorities; and (6) implement a range of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment practices to evaluate student learning, program effectiveness, and teaching, and provide targeted feedback that supports understanding and progression towards fluency, problem-solving, reasoning, and mastery.
- Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) lesson planning; (2) planning document; and (3) resource file. Further information is available in the unit outline.
To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the planning document component.
Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

In exceptional cases (noted in the Handbook) students may be required to participate in face-to-face laboratory classes when a return to UWA’s Crawley campus becomes possible in order to be awarded a final grade.
