- About this minor
In 2026 the UNESCO General Assembly recognised the great historical and contemporary importance of the Greek language and adopted February 9 as Greek Language Day. This minor allows students to study the ancient origins of the Greek language and will provide students with the skills to read some of the enduring works of Greek-speaking writers from Antiquity, as well as an appreciation of the influence of Greek on modern European languages and literature.
This minor is designed to be of interest both to those students from STEM disciplines but who have an interest in language, and especially in one of the languages which is the basis of the modern scientific and medical vocabulary, as well as those from Humanities and Social Science backgrounds who are seeking facility in an ancient language to augment their majors.
- Outcomes
- Students are able to (1) understand the basic elements of Ancient Greek grammar and syntax; (2) read unadapted Ancient Greek texts with the aid of a dictionary.; (3) analyse Ancient Greek texts from a literary, historical, or philological perspectives; and (4) appreciate the influence and legacy of Ancient Greek on other languages, including English.
